Cyber SecurityUncategorizedJanuary 10, 2017Cyber security has been a hot topic recently especially in the insurance industry with constantly evolving technology. The internet of things is becoming increasingly popular as devices are being interconnected creating new risks for everyone. In the news recently, the University of Alberta discovered malware on more than 300 of their computers that could potentially have affected more than 3,300 faculty, staff and students. This malware was linked to a student of the University that was charged with mischief in relation to computer data, unauthorised use of computer services, fraudulent intercepting functions of a computer system, and use of a computer system with intent to commit an offence. On a larger scale, Yahoo became the victim of the largest data breach in history. Over half a billion users’ accounts were stolen. Within these accounts some 200 million were listed for sale online. This attack was traced back to 2013 and was only detected in November of 2016. These types of incidents only stress the importance of the security of private information on your computer systems. Often times security is most vulnerable from within and the breaches go undetected for long periods of time.
