Snow SafetyUncategorizedDecember 16, 2016The first big snowfall of the winter season has descended upon us, and no doubt you’ve have been clearing the snow off your vehicle before embarking off to your destinations. It is cold outside and you might be in a rush, however don’t be tempted to leave snow on roof of your car or clear only the front windshield if you have had it parked outside the night before. This can be dangerous to you and those around you. Follow this simple snow safety tip to keep your family and others around you safe when driving this winter. Under Section 74 of the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, it is an offence to drive a motor vehicle where the driver does not have a clear view from the windshield, the driver side window, the front passenger side window, or the rear window. While this section does not define what a clear view is, it certainly requires more than scraping the minimal amount of ice off your front windshield so you can see ahead of you. You’d have to be able to see behind you as well as on your left and right, so make sure you thoroughly clear all the snow off your windshields before driving away. Another tip is that you should clear off any snow that has accumulated on the top of your vehicle. While it is not an offence to leave snow and ice on the roof of your vehicle, failing to clear it off creates a safety risk to you and other motorists on the road. Snow from your roof can blow off onto your windshield as well as blind other motorists when moving at higher speeds. Therefore, brushing off the snow from the top of your vehicle while the car warms up is the best practice before driving off to prevent accidents this winter season.
